Darling In The Franxx Anime Synopsis

In the distant future, giant beasts known as Klaxosaurs have driven humanity to near-extinction, forcing the survivors to seek refuge in massive fortress cities known as Plantations. Children raised here are trained in boy-girl pairs to pilot giant mechas known as FranXX—the only weapons known to be effective against Klaxosaurs. These children, bred for the sole purpose of piloting these machines, know nothing of the outside world and can only prove their existence by defending their race.

Hiro, an aspiring FranXX pilot, has lost motivation and self-confidence as a result of a failed aptitude test. Hiro retreats to a forest lake after missing his class’ graduation ceremony, where he meets a mysterious girl with two horns growing out of her head. She introduces herself as Zero Two, the codename of an infamous FranXX pilot known as the “Partner Killer.” Before Hiro can process what happened, the Plantation is rocked by a surprise Klaxosaur attack. Zero Two engages the creature in her FranXX, but it sustains significant damage in the fight and crashes near Hiro. When Zero Two discovers that her partner has been killed, she invites Hiro to pilot the mecha with her, and the pair easily defeats the Klaxosaur in the ensuing battle. Hiro has been given a second chance at redemption with a new partner by his side, but at what cost?

Darling In The Franxx Anime Characters

Squad 13

The series’ main characters are a group of ten parasites. The Squad 13 is based on Plantation, in their home area of Mistilteinn, colloquially known as the Birdcage. Squad 13 is one-of-a-kind, most notably for their custom-made Franxx. The squad is also notable for using names rather than code numbers to refer to one another. These names are derived from Japanese interpretations of their code numbers.

Pilots of the Franxx ‘Strelizia’

Zero Two

Hiro and Zero Two pilot the Franxx. It is armed with a massive spear called “Queen Pike” to battle klaxosaurs. When piloted by Zero Two alone, Strelizia appears humanoid when piloted by a male-female pair, but takes the form of a quadruped beast when piloted by a male-female pair.

Code:016 / Hiro

He was once dubbed a prodigy, but he is now a dropout pilot cadet after “losing” his ability to synchronise with his Franxx partner. So far, he is the only male capable of piloting Strelizia with Zero Two without suffering any damage. Hiro was once a leader among the children and was in charge of naming them, as well as asking the adults a lot of questions, which they never answered; he also witnessed Zero Two undergoing painful testing and the two ran away together as children, even going so far as to promise to marry when they grow up.

Hiro licked Zero Two’s blood from a cut before they were captured and separated, affecting his aptitude performance and making him incompatible with everyone except Zero Two. He also gradually develops horns and other klaxosaur characteristics. Their memories of each other were then erased.
Hiro, despite being a genius, was regarded as a disappointment until he reunited with Zero Two and became the Strelizia’s official stamen after being the only partner to survive riding with her three times. Hiro gradually regained his recollections of their past. Hiro confesses to Zero Two that he has always loved her, and they begin a relationship, vowing to keep their promise. Hiro is forcibly connected with the Klaxosaur Princess during the final battle against the klaxosaurs and discovers that the true enemy is VIRM, led by Papa, which intends to destroy the planet if necessary to eliminate the klaxosaurs. Zero Two saves Hiro, and they band together with the klaxosaurs to force the VIRM to flee. He discovers, however, that Zero Two is catatonic as a result of her mental link with Strelizia to battle the VIRM in space.

He decides to take part in the battle to save her. They overpower VIRM, who retreats again, and the two flee through a warp gate, promising to return to their friends. To defeat the VIRM and protect their friends’ future, they sacrifice themselves by detonating the VIRM’s home planet. Hiro and Zero Two are reincarnated into two children who meet in the final episode at some point in the future.

Code:002 / Zero Two

Zero Two, an elite pilot in APE’s special forces, is a mysterious and rebellious girl who is often referred to as a monster due to her red horns and klaxosaur blood. She is also known as the “partner killer,” because all partners who pilot Strelizia with her die after only three rides, with Hiro being the sole exception. Hiro is always referred to as her “darling” by her. Her true age is unknown, but her ultimate goal is to become fully human in order to reunite with a significant figure from her past, who turned out to be Hiro. She was inspired as a child by a book called “The Beast and the Prince,” which she notes is similar to her and Hiro’s circumstances. She begins writing her own version of the storey, but leaves the last page blank on purpose because she may have to part ways with Hiro.

She later discovers she is a clone of Dr. Franxx’s Klaxosaur Princess. When Hiro is forced to link with the princess, Zero Two is able to mentally connect with Strelizia in order to save him and prevent VIRM from destroying the planet, but her body becomes catatonic as a result. Mentally, she continued to fight VIRM in a galactic space battle. She and Hiro reunite, allowing Zero Two to merge with Strelizia, transforming into the Strelizia True Apus, and defeating the VIRM. She and Hiro then say their goodbyes to their friends, promising to return. Zero Two and Hiro are nearly defeated in the final episode, but they sacrifice themselves to destroy the VIRM home planet and free the souls trapped by VIRM. They are reincarnated into two children at some point in the future.

Pilots of the Franxx ‘Delphinium’

The Franxx piloted by Goro and Ichigo. As the Franxx for the squad leader, it is armed with two sword type weapons named “Envy Shop.”

Code:056 / Goro

A cool-headed and upbeat young man. He is a childhood friend of Hiro and Ichigo. He has been in love with Ichigo since he was a child, when she helped him defend himself from bullies. He keeps this to himself, however, because of her feelings for Hiro. He is considered the squad’s second unofficial leader and is more mature than the other boys. When he pairs up with Zero Two, he is deeply concerned for Hiro, but he shows support for their relationship because Hiro began smiling after meeting her. Following the final battle, he travels the world gathering supplies to aid the parasites in their survival. Goro and Ichigo are married and expecting their first child ten years later.

Code:015 / Ichigo

Squad 13’s emotional and blunt leader. She is a childhood friend of Hiro and Goro. She has adored Hiro since they were children, when he named her. She is concerned about his well-being because of the dangers that come with being Zero Two’s partner. She later acts jealously as Hiro and Zero Two become romantically involved, but she separates Zero Two from Hiro out of fear that Zero Two will devour Hiro’s humanity. She confesses her feelings for him, but he rejects her, and she realises that his mind and heart are so consumed by Zero Two that there is no room for her. Following this, she recognises the two’s importance to each other and accepts their relationship. She falls in love with Goro after being kissed by him. They’ve been married for ten years and are expecting their first child.

Pilots of the Franxx ‘Argentea’

The Franxx piloted by Zorome and Miku. As a Franxx that specializes in close combat and speed, it is loaded with a fist claw type weapon called “Night Claw”.

Code:666 / Zorome

A boisterous, obnoxious, and somewhat lecherous young man. He looks up to adults and aspires to be one someday. He despises the “elites” with teen and single digit code numbers. He frequently quarrels with his partner, Miku, and provides comic relief for the squad. During the ten-year time jump, he and Miku become educators for the next generation.

Code:390 / Miku

A girl who is loud, obnoxious, and direct. Miku is Kokoro’s childhood friend, and she frequently disagrees with her partner, Zorome, but she adores him. While she is outspoken, she also has a soft side and acts as a support system for her teammates. She and Zorome become teachers for the next generation during the ten-year time jump.

APE

APE is the organisation that rules over the Plantations, humanity’s last fortresses. Humanity heavily worships the Seven Sages of APE as deities.

Nana

The parasite manager of APE combat headquarters. She is in charge of the parasites in Mistilteinn and acts as their surrogate mother, having cared for them since their infancy. She is, however, strict with them and is capable of making difficult decisions regarding them. She used to be in a relationship with her partner, but her memories were erased after his death due to her grief. When she goes through repressed puberty, she is separated from the children, but she is brought back after Dr. Franxx’s death to care for them.

Hachi

The defence operation commander of APE combat headquarters, who oversees Squad 13 alongside Nana. He is stoic and direct with the parasites, and he takes his responsibilities seriously. He does, however, genuinely care about the parasites and assists in their care. He was a member of the same squad as Nana in the past and appears to have feelings for her despite his lack of emotions.

Dr. Franxx / Werner Frank

He created the Franxx units as a cyborg-human scientist. He is also credited with the creation of the parasites through his cloning research. He was previously infamous for his unethical cloning experiments, but this earned him a partnership with APE. Although he is enamoured with the beauty of his work, he is intrigued by the customs of previous civilizations and hastily assembled Squad 13 to serve as an experimental unit for that purpose. He created Zero Two and tortured her. He is concerned about the klaxosaurs and believes that Hiro and Zero Two’s collaboration will be crucial in defeating them. In episode 21, he is killed during the battle between the klaxosaurs and the VIRM, but not before reconciling with Zero Two.

Papa

The president of APE. He is the leader of the Seven Sages and is revered by the public as a god. All of humanity is loyal and obedient to him, but they fear him because of the severe consequences if any APE rule is broken. He is in charge of all parasite development and behaviour, and all health and upbringing decisions are delegated to him. He later becomes the leader of the VIRM alien race, which invaded Earth many aeons ago. He sends VIRM to try to destroy and absorb the parasites in order to overthrow the Klaxosaur Princess and kill the parasites.

Papa even goes so far as to demand that the remaining members of humanity merge with VIRM in order to eliminate further discrimination and hatred, but everyone rejects this. When Strelizia True Apus destroys VIRM’s fleet near Mars, he appears to be destroyed, but he reappears in the final episode near VIRM’s home planet, using his powers to disrupt Hiro’s connection with Zero Two. VIRM loses the battle, and their planet is destroyed, allowing the souls that have been assimilated into VIRM throughout time to return to their bodies. However, Papa and the Vice Chairman survive and swear that VIRM will return at the pinnacle of evolution one day.

Nines

Nines is a special and defence force that is directly subordinate to APE and Zero Two’s former unit, and it first appeared as a result of her DNA attempts to create functional pairs. Pistils and stamens exchange places in their pairs, which, along with their “genderness,” qualifies them as an alternative to traditional heterosexual relationships in other pairs. In this regard, all members of the squad have an understated androgynous appearance and avoid any gender roles in their behaviour.
