Blue Exorcist

Kazue Kato’s Blue Exorcist is a dark fantasy manga series written and illustrated in Japan. Rin Okumura, a teenager, discovers that he and his twin brother Yukio are Satan’s sons, born of a human woman, and that he is the inheritor of Satan’s powers. Rin enrols at True Cross Academy to become an exorcist under Yukio’s guidance in order to confront his father Satan, who has killed their guardian.

Blue Exorcist Anime Synopsis

Humans and demons, as well as Assiah and Gehenna, their respective planets, are two sides of the same coin. Possession is the sole way to move between the realms, just like in ghost stories. However, when Satan, the king of Gehenna, is unable to locate a suitable host, he stays imprisoned in his planet. In a desperate attempt to conquer Assiah, he sends his son instead, hoping for him to develop into a vessel that the demon king can control.

Blue Exorcist follows Rin Okumura, who looks to be a typical, if troubled, adolescent until he is besieged by demons one day. His world is turned upside down when he learns that he is Satan’s son and that his demon father wants him to return so they can conquer Assiah together. Instead of joining the ruler of Gehenna, Rin decides to train as an exorcist so that he might fight alongside his brother Yukio to defend Assiah.

Blue Exorcist Anime Characters

Blue Exorcist Anime Main characters

Rin Okumura

Rin Okumura is the story’s sixteen-year-old protagonist. He is Satan’s son, born of a human woman, and he inherited Satan’s abilities. Mephisto Pheles, the True Cross Academy principal, sealed his powers into the demon-slaying blade Kurikara at birth, allowing him to live a normal human life alongside his twin brother Yukio and foster father Shiro Fujimoto for over 16 years. After Kurikara’s powers are no longer sealed, Rin discovers his true identity, setting off a chain of events that culminates in Shiro’s death at the hands of Satan, who seeks to bring Rin back to Gehenna, the demon realm. Later, Mephisto Pheles confronts Rin, who insists that Mephisto allow him to join the exorcists and combat the demons. Rin is personally enrolled in True Cross Academy by Mephisto Pheles, the director, so that he can follow his ambition of becoming a “Meister” in Knight, then becoming a Paladin, and defeating Satan. He also wishes to get Yukio’s admiration. Rin, who is now an Esquire, wishes to advance to the highest level of an Exorcist, Paladin, in order to show Fujimoto that he was not intended to be used as a weapon. Rin is a good cook, and he cooks for both himself and Yukio.

Rin can use Kurikara to gain access to the power he acquired from Satan. When the blade is drawn, the sheath works as a portal to Gehenna, returning Rin to his demon form. Rin has a number of physical features in his human form that are evidence of his demonic nature, which are amplified in his demon incarnations. Rin can manipulate immensely destructive light blue flames in both forms, which are the hallmark of anything associated to Satan. When he draws Kurikara, however, the volume of the flames grows considerably, often resulting in Rin being “consumed” by his own flames and losing his mind. Rin is eventually taught how to control his flames by a spirit named Kongo Ucchusma (in the anime, this was changed to Shura and Yukio who helped him). Rin also has a Cat Sith familiar named Kuro, who was once Shiro’s and has two tails like a nekomata. When Yukio blasted him with Satan’s power in his eyes, the demon part of Rin awakens and takes over his body for a brief while, nearly killing his friends when he unleashes the full strength of Satan’s flame before Rin regains control. Rin’s looks changed as a result of his awakening, becoming more like to his demonic form. Rin is voiced by Nobuhiko Okamoto in Japanese and Bryce Papenbrook in English, with Daisuke Namikawa doing the same in VOMIC. Ryou Kimura played him in the musical The Blue Exorcist.

Yukio Okumura

Rin’s younger fraternal twin brother is Yukio Okumura. When it was revealed that Satan’s impregnated wife was going to have twins, it was assumed that Satan’s power would be divided between them. Yukio, on the other hand, did not acquire any of Satan’s power due to the fragility of his body, and was thus born entirely human, with Rin inheriting all of Satan’s powers. Yukio, on the other hand, was born with a spirit wound from his sibling, allowing him to be aware of demons for as long as he can remember. Yukio began training as an Exorcist when he was seven years old in order to defend Rin with the help of Fujimoto. Yukio is already an instructor at the Exorcist cram school, teaching Anti-Demon Pharmacology to Rin’s class, despite the fact that both Yukio and Rin are in their first year at True Cross Academy.

Yukio is frequently described as a genius, having already earned the title “Meister” in both the Dragoon and Doctor classes, despite the fact that most people would aim for Meister in only one (both are still fully qualified exorcists). He is currently classified as an exorcist of the Middle First Class. Though it is stated that Yukio formerly loved for his brother, after continuing to train as an exorcist to protect Rin, he grows to despise him owing to Rin’s unique treatment as the son of Satan with supernatural abilities, and blames him for their adoptive father’s death, feeding his rage. However, as the blue exorcist series progresses, Yukio begins to feel the same way he did previously towards his brother. Yukio frequently chastises Rin for his rash deeds and reckless attitude, fearing that his demonic nature may engulf him. Despite his generally good nature, it is shown that he has a sadistic side that he suppresses. Yukio realises he inherited Satan’s flame through his eyes during the fight against Todo, and that it unconsciously shields him whenever he is near death. Yukio becomes fascinated with learning the truth about his and Rin’s birth as a result of the finding. Yukio began to feel that Shiro never loved him and merely nurtured him to become a living weapon after reading the file supplied by Lightning that contained the Order of True Cross’ secret, whereas his brother was adored because he entirely inherited Satan’s strength. Yukio joins the Illuminati as a result of his desire to learn the truth and his envy of Rin.

Although this is not canon, it is adjusted in the blue exorcist anime so that he has Satanic abilities. In Japanese, he is voiced by Jun Fukuyama, while in English, he is dubbed by Johnny Yong Bosch, while in VOMIC, he is voiced by Ryuichi Kijima. Kimito Totani played him in the musical The Blue Exorcist.

Exorcists

Shiemi Moriyama

Shiemi Moriyama is the daughter of the owner of an Exorcist-only store. She is kind and has a lifelong passion for gardening, but she struggles with self-esteem. Shiemi never left her house before the series and spent her days tending to the garden with her grandmother. Rin and Yukio exorcise the demon that was draining her life force after her grandmother dies, and she decides to become an Exorcist.

She is currently an Esquire, and she later passes the exams to study in the Academy’s regular classes with Yukio’s help. Despite her upbringing, Shiemi performed poorly in tests at first, but it was soon discovered that she was using names she had made up. Shiemi’s grades improved after she learned to use formal names. Shiemi initially only spoke with Rin and Yukio at the academy, but she eventually becomes friends with Ryuji, Konekomaru, and Renzo. She also gains Izumo’s friendship despite being used and mistreated by her at first. Shiemi is devastated after learning Rin’s secret, believing she is not trustworthy enough for them to have included her in the first place. On the Kyoto mission, however, she reconciles with Rin after seeing how much he suffers as a result of his nature. Shiemi possesses the ability to become a Tamer and can summon a dependable Greenman spirit capable of producing healing herbs and plant-related barriers. Shiemi demonstrates great inner strength by being able to keep her Greenman around for extended periods of time without tiring. Her Greenman understands her method of naming plants and can produce the correct one when asked.

Ryuji Suguro

Ryuji Suguro (nicknamed “Bon”) is a tenacious and fiery character. Despite his delinquent demeanour and demeanour, he is a hardworking student and the best in class. Ryuji is the heir to Kyoto’s Cursed Temple. Because of the Blue Night’s destruction of the temple and his hatred for his father Tatsuma Suguro, he swears he will defeat Satan and rebuild his Temple. When Rin’s identity is revealed, Ryuji and the majority of his classmates begin to avoid him; however, after a confrontation with his father and Rin, Ryuji and his classmates assist Rin in escaping impending execution and reconcile with him, claiming that he only blames Rin for not trusting his friends with his secret. During the battle with the Impure King, he inherits from his father Tatsuma Suguro a familiar named Karura (a phoenix-like demon with the ability to use strong amounts of red flames to incinerate almost everything and reincarnate when it dies), which he uses to create a Gouhaen (a fire-element barrier) to prevent any miasma emanating from the Impure King from spreading further. Ryuji, like Rin and the others, is currently an Esquire attempting to achieve Meister in both Aria and Dragoon. He later becomes Lightning’s apprentice, as Bon had lost his way in life and needed a new path to take. In Japanese, he is voiced by Kazuya Nakai, and in English, by Kyle Hebert. Yuki Tomotsune played him in the musical The Blue Exorcist.

Renzo Shima

Renzo Shima is a character who is both carefree and fearful. He is devoted to Bon and Konekomaru, who grew up with him at the Cursed Temple in Kyoto. Renzo is the second member of the cast to accept Rin after discovering his true identity, as he finds ignoring Rin to be inconvenient. He is obsessed with women, and especially with Izumo. He was dubbed the “Erotic Demon” in elementary school. He is attempting to be more refined now that he is in high school. His hair is naturally black, but he has it coloured pink (to the chagrin of his father). Renzo, like his two brothers, fights with a K’rik (Khakkhara) staff and hopes to become a Meister in Aria. Later in the manga, it is revealed that Renzo has been hiding his true abilities all along, as he is capable of summoning high level demons to do his bidding. Using said summoning, on the other hand, drains him completely. Renzo abandons the Academy and rejoins the Illuminati after revealing himself as an Illuminati spy, but later his brother confesses to Rin and the others that he is a double agent recruited by Mephisto, eventually returning to his friends’ side. Despite his claims that he has always been on the side of the True Cross, there are still doubts among the order’s members about his true loyalty. In Japanese, he is voiced by Koji Yusa, and in English, he is voiced by Brian Beacock. Kazuki Watanabe played him in the musical The Blue Exorcist.

Konekomaru Miwa

Konekomaru Miwa is a shy but brilliant individual who can devise complex strategies in a short period of time. He is devoted to Ryuji and Renzo because they grew up together at the same Temple in Kyoto. He is kind to everyone, but despite seeing his true character, it takes him a long time to reconcile with Rin after discovering his secret. He is an orphan and the sole survivor of the Miwa family. He intends to become a Meister in Aria. Before Rin is able to save Konekomaru, a crow demon takes advantage of Konekomaru’s fear of Rin and possesses him. In Japanese, he is voiced by Yuki Kaji, and in English, by Miki Moran. Jun Muruyama played him in the musical The Blue Exorcist.

Izumo Kamiki

Izumo Kamiki, who comes from a family of shrine maidens dedicated to the deity Inari, is easily one of the best students, and she is well aware of it. She has a tsundere attitude and is rude to everyone except her childhood friend Noriko Paku, who was the only person in her elementary school who spoke to her. Izumo, despite being very proud and difficult to talk to, cares about her fellow Esquire and is the first of Rin’s classmates to accept Rin after his identity as Satan’s son was revealed. Izumo attempts to become a Meister in Tamer and has the ability to summon two Kitsune (foxes) to fight for her. Izumo is apprehended by Renzo during the school festival after revealing himself to be an Illuminati spy. Izumo’s past is also revealed; the kitsune she summons has been a part of her family for generations.

Blue Exorcist Other characters

Amaimon

Amaimon is Satan’s other son and the “King of the Earth.” He is the seventh most powerful of the Eight Demon Kings. Amaimon has extensive control over the land, including the ability to cause earthquakes. He is eccentric and despises being mocked or ignored. Unlike his father and elder brother Mephisto Pheles, Amaimon initially had little interest in Rin, preferring to tour Japan upon his arrival, but after fighting him, he became obsessed with him. Amaimon mentions that he has a cousin who is interested in the occult and that he would be delighted if he could bring him a human eye. In the anime blue exorcist, after Rin defeats Amaimon, he transforms into a green hamster for the rest of the episodes, racing in a hamster wheel in Mephisto’s office.

Saburota Todo

Saburota Todo is a former Upper Second Class exorcist, Exorcist Cram School teacher, and Director of the Saishinbu, a section of the True Cross Academy containing dangerous artefacts such as the Right and Left Eyes of the Impure King. He is cunning and expert at manipulating others to achieve his as-yet unknown goals. He officially left the True Cross Order after stealing the Impure King’s Left Eye. He has the ability to take control of demons and use their abilities. He appears to be interested in Yukio’s development as a result of his status as Satan’s son, and even attempted to persuade him to murder Rin. He became hotter as a result of gaining Karura’s power. In Japanese, he is voiced by Kazuhiro Yamaji and Junichi Suwabe in his youth, and Ray Chase in English.
