Beyond The Boundary Anime Synopsis

Mirai Kuriyama is the sole survivor of a Spirit World warrior clan with the ability to use their blood as a weapon. As a result, Mirai is tasked with tracking down and killing “youmu,” which are said to be the manifestation of negative human emotions. Mirai comes across Akihito Kanbara, a rare half-breed of youmu in human form, one day while deep in thought on the school roof. In a panic, she thrusts her blood sabre into him, only to discover that he is an immortal being. From then on, the two form an impromptu friendship centred on Mirai’s constant attempts to kill Akihito in order to boost her own shaky confidence as a Spirit World warrior. Akihito eventually persuades her to join the Literary Club, which is home to two other powerful Spirit World warriors, Hiroomi and Mitsuki Nase.

However, as the group’s bond grows stronger, so does the tenacity of the youmu around them. As the inevitable release of the most powerful youmu, Beyond the Boundary, approaches, their misadventures will quickly turn into a fight for survival.

Beyond The Boundary Anime Characters

Main Characters

Akihito Kanbara

Akihito is a second-year high school student with short blonde hair who is the offspring of a youmu and a human. He has the ability to heal from any wound quickly, despite the fact that he is still in pain. As a result, Mirai employs him as a guinea pig to help her overcome her apprehension about killing Youmus. He belongs to the Literary Club. He has an attraction to girls with glasses, as evidenced by his spontaneous compliments to Mirai and being mocked for it by Mitsuki. If Akihito’s physical human body becomes severely weakened, his dormant youmu half emerges, physically transforming his body into a hideous feral appearance that then goes on a rampage. Akihito’s youmu half is extremely powerful, capable of easily overwhelming supernatural cages and barriers that try to contain it, as well as having enough destructive force to physically devastate whatever landscape surrounds it. Because of his youmu half, Akihito implies that the Nase clan are not exactly his friends, but rather people tasked with keeping an eye on him and killing him if his youmu-half ever goes berserk. Following a youmu transformation, Akihito suffers from depression as a result of nearly killing Hiroomi in a previous rampage. Akihito’s youmu half has the most destructive power of any youmu and is known as “Beyond the Boundary.”

Mirai Kuriyama

Mirai is a first-year high school student with short, light pink hair styled into a bob and red-rimmed glasses, which prompts Akihito to refer to her as a ‘bespectacled beauty,’ much to her chagrin. She possesses a unique ability to manipulate blood, even within the scope of the Spirit World. Overuse of her ability causes severe anaemia while also making her feel isolated, and she appears to attempt suicide by jumping off the high school’s roof until she is saved by Akihito. She is summoned to assassinate Akihito but develops feelings for him. She is frequently mocked for constantly posting about her misfortunes on her blog and Twitter account. She usually describes most situations with the phrase “How unpleasant,” especially when Akihito makes a remark. Despite her cursed blood lineage, Mirai was adopted by the Inami clan and befriended their daughter, Yui Inami, whom she killed out of fear after Yui was possessed by the Hollow Shadow—an act Mirai deeply regrets and which gave birth to her fear of killing. Her signature weapon is a blood-red sword formed from her blood.

Mitsuki Nase

Mitsuki is a second-year high school student with dark hair that is silky. She is the President of the Literary Club and the younger sister of Hiroomi and Izumi. She enjoys making fun of Akihito by claiming to be his childhood friend (in actuality, Akihito first met her in junior high; the OVA revealing it was the same incident in which his youmu half nearly killed Hiroomi). Although she refers to her brother Hiromi as a “pervert” and refers to him as a “aniki” (respected older brother) to sound less casual, she adores him and cherishes him. Her clan is in charge of Spirit World Warriors in their area. Izumi instilled in her the belief that Spirit World Warriors must be alone for the rest of their lives due to their duties, which resulted in Mitsuki missing out on experiences with her peers as she grew up. As a familiar, she has a rodent-like youmu named “Yakiimo.” Mitsuki, like her brother, is capable of erecting cages.

Hiroomi Nase

Hiroomi is Mitsuki’s younger brother and a third-year high school student. He has black hair in a bowl cut and always wears a scarf due to his supernatural powers that cause him to be cold. He also belongs to the Literary Club. Hiroomi adores his sister Mitsuki and enjoys having her call him “Onii-chan.” He also enjoys teasing Akihito and affectionately refers to him as “Akkey.” He is skilled at erecting cages or barriers to prevent you from entering a protected area. His supernatural abilities cause him to be extremely sensitive to cold, causing him to constantly wear a scarf and warm his fingers in Akihito’s armpits, much to the chagrin of the latter. His back is severely scarred from having to restrain Akihito’s youmu rampage in the past, which nearly killed him.

Spirit World Warriors

Shizuku Ninomiya

A capable Spirit World Warrior. In addition to Spirit Hunting, she is known as “Nino-san” and works as a teacher at Nagatsuki High School. Despite her beauty, she is constantly rejected by men.

Yayoi Kanbara

Akihito’s mother, who is also a Spirit World Warrior. She is constantly on the move and sends Akihito postcards to check in on him on a regular basis. Akihito describes her as a “free-spirited” avant-garde thinker with an eccentric personality, and she is thus ashamed of her childlike behaviour. This was demonstrated during Akihito’s elementary school’s Parents’ Day, when she sat at a student’s desk dressed as a panda and participated in class.

Izumi Nase

The Nase clan’s eldest daughter. Despite having a malicious undertone, she usually has a calm demeanour. She believes that youmu are no different than crops or farm animals and exist solely to provide a living for her clan. Izumi, like the rest of her clan, is skilled at erecting barriers. Her signature weapon is a dual-tipped spear, and she possesses a type of freezing ability. She has a history with Miroku and also carries a youmu within her body, which she tries to keep hidden from the rest of her clan.

Maya Minegishi

During the Spirit World Warrior-slaying incidents, a silver-haired girl was pursued. Her signature weapons include a revolver and an automatic pistol. She also has the ability to negate the authority of an Interrogation Officer. She had an incident with Miroku in the past.

Observation Department

Miroku Fujima

The series’ main antagonist and an interrogation officer with the Spirit World Warriors’ Observation Department. He has the ability to instantly kill a youmu by focusing his attention on it. He carries a youmu within his body, which grants him special abilities.

Ayaka Shindō

Youmu’s appraiser. To normal people, her appraisal business appears to be a photo shop. Her true form is a powerful multi-tailed fox-like youmu, but she usually appears as a human. She is also capable of erecting barriers and cages.
