Another Anime Characters

Main characters

Kōichi Sakakibara

A 15-year-old boy who transferred from Tokyo to Yomiyama North Middle School’s Class 3-3 in 1998, but was hospitalised due to a pneumothorax before the school year began. While his father is conducting research in India, Kichi lives with his grandparents and aunt Reiko. Despite warnings, he befriends Mei Misaki and works with his classmates to uncover the truth behind the curse of Class 3-3.

Mei Misaki

Koichi first meets her on the elevator of Yumigaoka Hospital, where she is on her way to deliver a doll to her “poor other half” in the second basement. Her classmates completely ignore her at school. When Koichi goes out of his way to interact with her, she warns him not to, but eventually relents and opens up to him about her situation after Koichi is also ignored by the class. She tells Koichi that her left eye is a doll’s eye and that she has a special ability, noting later in the storey that she can see the “colour of death,” that is, identify people who are dead or near death.

Kōichi’s relatives

Yōsuke Sakakibara

Koichi’s widowed father, as well as Reiko’s brother-in-law, is a college professor conducting research in India. He calls his son on a regular basis to chat, but he doesn’t go into much detail about their family history, preferring to complain about the heat. The phone connection usually fills with static and drops just as Yosuke says something useful.

Ritsuko Sakakibara

Koichi’s mother and Reiko’s older sister passed away 15 years ago, shortly after giving birth to him. She was a Class 3-3 student at Yomiyama Middle School in 1972, and thus Misaki Yomiyama’s classmate. It is later revealed that she died while Reiko was in Class 3-3, making her a victim of the curse for that year. Ritsuko Mikami was her maiden name.

Reiko Mikami

Ritsuko’s younger sister and Koichi’s aunt. While Koichi’s father is away, she has been hanging out with him at his grandparents’ house. At the start of the storey, she gives him advice about Yomiyama Middle School in the form of a set of “rules.” She usually comes home exhausted from work. When Koichi’s mother died 15 years ago, she was in class 3-3. It is later revealed that she is also Ms. Mikami, the assistant homeroom teacher for Class 3-3, and that the fourth rule she gave Koichi was to separate their home life from their school life; thus, Kichi addresses her as Reiko at home and Ms. Mikami at school. During the events of Koichi’s summer camp trip, Mei discovers and Koichi realises that Reiko is the Casualty, or the spirit who causes the deaths of those in class 3-3 or their relatives.

Mei’s relatives

She is an artist and the owner of the ball-jointed doll store and museum “Blue Eyes Empty to All, In the Twilight of Yomi.” Koichi later confirms that she is Mei Misaki’s adoptive mother, but they have a distant relationship in which they speak to each other as if they are strangers. Mei reveals that her mother had a stillbirth 12 years ago, which caused her to become obsessed with dolls; as a result, she and Mei treat each other as strangers. Yukiyo Misaki is her given name.

Misaki Fujioka

She was the person Mei was delivering a present to in the basement of Yumigaoka Hospital, which Koichi learns houses the memorial chapel. She was first introduced as Mei’s “other half” and later as her cousin. In reality, she is Mei’s twin sister, who was raised separately after their birth, though they occasionally met. Has a brighter personality than Mei. Mitsuyo is the name of Misaki and Mei’s biological mother. Misaki died of leukaemia in a hospital in April.

The doll shop and museum’s receptionist. When she sees Koichi, she offers him a student discount to their museum. Mei later reveals that she is her great-grandmother.

Yomiyama North Middle School

Class 3-3 students

Tomohiko Kazami

He’s one of the class delegates and an honour student who wears glasses. He and Teshigawara have known each other since they were children.

Yukari Sakuragi

For the girls, the class 3-3 representative. Her outward appearance is friendly. In May, after learning that her mother was killed in a car accident, she falls down the stairs and impales her neck on the sharp end of her umbrella.

Naoya Teshigawara

A classmate who befriends Koichi, whom he refers to as “Sakaki.” His appearance is a little taller than the other boys’ and he has a cheerful demeanour. He was asked to explain the situation to Koichi as a sports fan with a shallow personality, but he finds it difficult to do so.

Yūya Mochizuki

A classmate who is also a member of the Art Club. He and Teshigawara assist Koichi in resolving the 3-3 disaster. Koichi has a crush on Ms. Mikami, the assistant homeroom teacher, and frequently inquires about her health and whereabouts.

Yumi Ogura

In 1998, I was a student in 9th Grade Class 3. In her role as the head of countermeasures, she makes friends with Takako Sugiura and Izumi Akazawa, who act as her right and left hands. She is a sweet and shy lady. Her brother Atsushi and Aya’s deaths cause her to lose her mind and sanity. In the anime, she attempts to murder Mei, mistaking her for an extra student, but she falls from the second floor and breaks her neck. She survives the curse in these adaptations because she appears briefly in the manga talking with Mei and always stays in the company of Izumi’s group in the novel. In the live-action film, she appears in a few scenes but does not say much, and she survives the Inn incident.

Izumi Akazawa

As a student in charge of countermeasures, she devises and implements strategies to deal with the Class 3-3 disaster. In June, she will take over for her friend Yukari as the class representative on the girls’ side. She resents Mei and Koichi for breaking the class rule of not interacting with the person who is “not there,” believing that their actions undermined the countermeasures and contributed to the deaths continuing. During the summer trip, she is pursued by Mineko Numata and dies after falling off a veranda and breaking her neck, according to the novel. Her hair is styled in bunches in the manga and anime. Ayatsuji wrote in the manga series’ afterword that Akazawa was a supporting character in the novels, but that manga artist Kiyohara gave her a larger role, which worked well for the adaptation’s climax and big twist.

Takako Sugiura

In 1998, I was a 9th grade Class 3 student. Yumi Ogura and Izumi Akazawa, the countermeasures’ personal right-arm, are her friends. She is a young girl who adores her friends; in the anime, she has a crush on Junta. She used to go to the same school as Mei’s twin sister, which led her to believe Mei is an extra student. After Junta’s death, she loses her mind and attempts to murder Mei, but she becomes entangled in the cables and dies. In the manga, she perishes in the fire, while in the novel, she is murdered by Mineko. In the live-action film, she survives and is protected by Tomohiko.

Shōji Kubodera

Homeroom teacher for Class 3-3. In July, realising that the antidotes to the Class 3-3 disaster are ineffective, he murders his bedridden mother by smothering her with a pillow the night before stabbing himself in the neck in front of the class.

Tatsuji Chibiki

He is referred to as the “ruler” of the secondary library by Reiko. He usually dresses all in black. In 1972, the year Misaki Yomiyama died, he was the teacher for Class 3-3. Years later, he resigned as a teacher but remained as librarian, claiming to be “running away [from the curse]” but staying close by out of guilt. He’s kept a record of the phenomena, the deceased, and their connections since then, and he shares his findings with Koichi and Mei.

Misaki Yomiyama

In 1972, he was an honour student from Yomiyama Middle School’s Class 3-3. She was extremely well-liked and popular among her peers and teachers. She was killed in a house fire that also killed his brother and his family. His classmates were so heartbroken by his untimely death and unable to accept it that they pretended he was still alive at school, which resulted in a mysterious photo of the supposedly dead Misaki.

Sanae Mizuno

A Yumigaoka Hospital nurse who befriends Koichi. She is prone to mishaps, which is a running gag. Takeru, her younger brother, is in Class 3-3. She tries to help Koichi solve the mystery of Yomiyama North by providing him with information gleaned from conversations with her colleagues and her brother. She is killed in June when the elevator she was riding in breaks its cable and falls down the shaft, causing the ceiling beam to fall on her.
