A Lull In The Sea Anime Synopsis
All humans used to live beneath the sea. However, some people preferred the surface and chose not to live permanently underwater. As a result, they lost their god-given protection known as “Ena,” which allowed them to breathe underwater. The chasm between the denizens of the sea and those of the surface widened over time, though contact between the two peoples remained.
Hikari Sakishima and Manaka Mukaido, along with their childhood friends Chisaki Hiradaira and Kaname Isaki, are forced to leave the sea and attend a school on the surface in Nagi no Asu kara. Tsumugu Kihara, a fellow student and fisherman who adores the sea, also meets the group there.
Hikari and his friends’ lives are bound to change as they deal with deep-seated hatred and discrimination between the people of the sea and the people of the surface, storms in their personal lives, and an impending tempest that may spell doom for all who dwell on the surface.

A Lull In The Sea Anime Characters
Shioshishio’s one of four childhood friends. He has a short fuse and frequently chastises Manaka for her mistakes. Despite this, he harbours strong feelings for her while believing she is in love with Tsumugu. He is Shioshishio’s Chief Priest’s son, and he serves the Sea God. This, according to tradition, makes him the next Chief Priest. He initially despises all people from the surface, but after learning about the relationships between land and sea humans (via Akari and Itaru), he gradually realises that there is no distinction between people from the surface and those from the sea. Soon after saving Akari during the Ofunehiki festival, he goes into hibernation. Hikari reappears during a Tomoebi without any signs of ageing after a 5-year time jump, making him the first person to do so. He returns to Mihama Middle School as a classmate of Miuna and Sayu, and he lives with his sister in the Shiodome household. Manaka and Hikari acknowledge each other’s feelings in the final scene and begin a relationship, looking forward to the future together.
One of Shioshishio’s students. She is an indecisive middle schooler who frequently cries and is completely reliant on Hikari and Chisaki. Despite the taboo nature of dating someone on the surface, Manaka appears to have feelings for Tsumugu at first, which Hikari gradually accepts. She gradually gains independence as time goes on. After saving Akari during the Ofunehiki festival and falling into the sea, she goes into hibernation and takes on the role of the Sea God’s sacrificial maiden. After the time jump, she is discovered in the middle of the Wooden Maidens’ graveyard near Shioshishio and brought to the surface while losing her Ena. One week later, she awakens and decides to stay with the Shiodome family. As a result of leaving her position as the sacrificial maiden, she has also lost her ability to fall in love and half of her memory. Later, it is revealed that she has been in love with Hikari all along but decided to keep it a secret as she knew about Chisaki’s feelings for him. Manaka and Hikari acknowledge each other’s feelings in the final scene and begin a relationship, looking forward to the future together.
One of Shioshishio’s students. She has feelings for Hikari but is afraid to confess them because he is in love with Manaka. As a result, she conceals her true feelings for Hikari, believing that revealing her feelings for her will harm their relationship. Chisaki is the only Shioshishio friend who does not hibernate after the Ofunehiki festival. She has been staying with the Kihara family since the Ofunehiki festival while attending nursing school. She feels left out when she reunites with her Shioshishio friends because she is now much older than them.
Chisaki is afraid of change and feels guilty for leading a relatively happy life despite the absence of her friends during the time skip. She has been clinging to her old feelings for Hikari in order to pretend she hasn’t changed in the last five years, but she has actually fallen in love with Tsumugu. Chisaki and Tsumugu marry by the end of the storey, and she continues to live in the Kihara residence with a now-healthy Isamu, while Tsumugu is away at college.
Shioshishio’s one of four childhood friends. For his age, he is quiet and mature. Despite being the most mature of his friends, Kaname has always felt left out, as if he is not as loved by others as his friends are. He has long harboured romantic feelings for Chisaki and adores her. He goes into hibernation during the Ofunehiki festival after falling off the boat while assisting Chisaki in saving Tsumugu. Kaname, like Hikari, wakes up without having aged and begins living at the Kihara family’s home after the time skip. He realises that if Chisaki’s feelings for Hikari are unrequited, she will turn to Tsumugu, not him. Kaname decides to start a relationship with Sayu after she tells him that she was waiting for him specifically.
A surface boy whose grandfather is a fisherman. He meets Manaka one day when she gets caught in his net. He is a quiet, stoic man who is fascinated by the underwater world. Tsugumu’s grandfather was from the sea, and his relationship with his mother is complicated. He attends college and majors in oceanography after the time jump. He lives in the city and works at a university doing research on sea villages. He develops feelings for Chisaki and eventually falls in love with her. He follows Chisaki into the sea after inadvertently declaring his love for her. It is later revealed that he had been aware of Manaka’s feelings for Hikari since the eve of the Ofunehiki five years prior, but agreed to keep them hidden at Manaka’s request. Chisaki finally accepts her love for Tsumugu after speaking with Kaname about her true feelings, and they become a couple. He was last seen walking to the train station with Chisaki as he prepared to leave for college.
Itaru’s daughter, a third-grade elementary school girl. Miuna first met Akari when she paid them a visit shortly after her birth. She adores Akari, but the prospect of losing her, as she did her mother, has caused her to refuse to accept Akari as a member of her family. She eventually overcomes her fear and accepts Akari as her new mother. Despite the fact that he becomes her step-uncle after Akari’s marriage, she develops a crush on Hikari after he helps her accept familial love. Miuna could usually be found staring out at the ocean during the five-year time skip, waiting for Hikari to return. She starts middle school with Sayu after the time jump. Her feelings for Hikari have only grown stronger, to the point where she has rejected one of her other classmates who has liked her since elementary school. When Miuna accidentally falls into the sea, she develops Ena on her skin, allowing her to breathe underwater like her mother. In episode 25, she transforms into Ojoshi-sama, but is saved by Hikari. In the epilogue, she confronts her unrequited feelings for Hikari while looking forward to the future, where she believes new feelings will emerge.
A girl in third grade with light brown pigtails and hazel eyes. She has been Miuna’s best friend for a long time, having befriended her despite childhood bullying. She develops feelings for Kaname after Kaname convinces her to open up about her past and befriend Hikari. After the time jump, she starts middle school with Miuna and resolves to study hard in order to become an independent woman, but her crush on Kaname grows stronger, and she tries her hardest to overcome it. She eventually persuades Kaname to see her as a girl his age, and they begin a relationship.
Hikari and Akari’s widowed father. He is also Shioshishio’s Chief Priest, in charge of religious duties. He loves his children and wants them to be able to make their own decisions. In episode 26, he awakens from slumber and meets his grandson, Akira.
He is a scale (hence his name) and the Sea God’s messenger. He appears to be a man in his twenties, but he does not appear to age. He ensures that everyone abides by the village’s rules. He’s a pervert who enjoys drinking sake. Despite his perverted attitude, he expresses genuine affection for the original Ojoshi-sama.
Hikari’s older sister who married Miuna’s father, Itaru. She was Miori’s friend and grew to love their family. She wanted to be there for them after Miori died. She has a four-year-old son named Akira after the time jump.
Miuna’s father’s name. Miori, his first wife, was from the sea. After a few years of mourning Miori’s death, he gradually begins a relationship with Akari, eventually marrying her. He eventually becomes Akira’s father.
The son of Akari and Itaru. He is Hikari’s nephew, born during Shioshishio’s hibernation. He’s naughty and only listens to his sister, Miuna. He becomes “smitten” with Manaka. In the epilogue, he develops Ena on his skin, just like his sister.
Akari’s close friend and Miuna’s deceased mother. She was originally from Shioshishio but came to the surface to marry Itaru.

Tsumugu’s university research professor. He is very curious and enthusiastic about the sea and hibernation. The university eventually urged him to return because Saltflake was falling more frequently.
Tsumugu’s mother. She and her husband live in the city. Tsumugu appears to have a strained relationship with his mother, as he avoids any opportunity for the two of them to speak. Tsumugu later states that she and her husband despise the sea and have moved to the city, leaving Isamu behind. This could be his reasoning for being hostile to her. Despite Tsumugu’s escape, she doesn’t appear to hold it against him that he chose to live with Isamu.
A former Sea God sacrifice maiden. She had a surface lover, but she developed feelings for the Sea God as well and never blamed him for anything. They had two children together as well. Before the Sea God realised what was going on, he took her ability to love someone and returned her to the surface. After Hikari saves Miuna, the Ojoshi-emotions sama’s are released into the sea, causing the Sea God to realise her true feelings. As a result, the Calm came to an end.
